Transgender Day of Remembrance

Sunday, November 20 is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Around this date ceremonies were held throughout New York State to memorialize the members of our community who have died in the past year as a result of gender-motivated violence.

Through vigils and other ceremonies, we express love and respect for transgender members of our community who live in the face of widespread discrimination. We encourage allies to join us in memorializing and celebrating those we have lost and to be reminded that transgender people are your sons, daughters, parents, friends and neighbors.

Transgender New Yorkers have been a rich, vibrant part of the LGBT community and deeply involved in the movement for equality and justice dating back to Stonewall. Every year at the Transgender Day of Remembrance, we memorialize the lives of transgender people around the world who were killed as a result of violence motivated by prejudice. We celebrate the courage of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals who live openly and increase the visibility of our community.
