TRANScribe Project:
Advocating for Equality and Justice Through Our Stories
You possess the most important tool in advocating for transgender civil rights - YOUR STORY.
ABOUT:
One of the biggest obstacles to achieving equality and justice for transgender and gender non-conforming people here in New York is the fact that many New Yorkers do not understand what it means to be transgender or gender non-conforming. This causes misconceptions and forms a culture where transgender people are often disregarded, discriminated against or worse.
The best way to overcome these obstacles is to educate the public about the lives of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals and our communities. Transgender and gender non-conforming New Yorkers, like other communities in our state, are diverse and vibrant groups of people with many different stories and experiences.
Any one of our stories can help to challenge stereotypes, shed light on discrimination and show people that we trans and gender non-conforming New Yorkers are just like any of our other friends, family members, neighbors and coworkers.
This is why we need YOU:
- the transgender/ gender non-conforming individual
- the partner
- the parent
- the child
- the sibling
- the coworker
- the union member
- the boss
- the teacher
- the doctor
- the friend
- the clergy
- the ally
- or any other community member
to tell your story.
PURPOSE:
The power of sharing stories is the key to changing laws, policies and, most importantly, people’s hearts and minds. These stories not only affect laws and regulations, but show how the lives of people across the state could be improved by ensuring that transgender New Yorkers are treated like everyone else. One story could touch the hearts of many and that story could be yours.
Together with our partner organizations, the Pride Agenda is implementing a detailed campaign to pass a statewide transgender non-discrimination law and to achieve broader equality and justice. The TRANScribe Project, undertaken in collaboration with the New York Civil Liberties Union, is a critical part of this advocacy and education. The success of this work depends on you.
The stories submitted will be used by the Pride Agenda and the New York Civil Liberties Union in public education and advocacy (including and not limited to a website, print ads, radio and television spots, and legislative packets) for transgender equality and justice. We will respect your privacy by only releasing personal information with permission and honoring any requests for anonymity.
We understand that telling your personal story can at times be difficult and that there are potential risks in telling your story. However, it is vitally important to tell our stories to educate our fellow New Yorkers about the misconceptions and stereotypes around transgender individuals, shed light on discrimination, demonstrate that we are more than just our transgender identity and show that we deserve to be treated equally.
Please refer to our guidelines and prompts for more information about submitting a story to the TRANScribe Project.
