Marriage and Family Protection

Thanks to the tireless work of individual New Yorkers, businesses, faith leaders, labor unions, the Pride Agenda, and our partners, marriage is now a reality for New York’s same-sex couples. New York joins Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. in extending marriage rights to all loving couples. Several other states have used civil unions, domestic partnerships or other statewide mechanisms to support same-sex couples and their families. Those institutions, however, create a second-class status by denying loving same-sex couples the choice of entering into marriage.

The New York State Legislature had protected same-sex couples in the past by granting hospital visitation rights, legal authority to control a loved one’s bodily remains, and access to Family Court for orders of protection from domestic violence. Marriage, however, bestows at least 1,324 legal rights upon same-sex couples that otherwise would have been denied without massive changes to New York State law.
